CHESHIRE CAT SITRI OF ALICE'S WONDERLAND

One can imaginatively associate the ‘Cheshire Cat’ of character featured in Lewis Carroll’s 1865 masterpiece of 'Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland' with Sitri to fuse together. Alice first encounters the ‘Cheshire Cat’ at the Duchess’s house within her kitchen, and then later outside upon the branches of a Tree, where it appears and disappears at will, engaging Alice in amusing but sometimes vexing conversations. The Cat sometimes raises philosophical points, which annoy or baffle Alice; it does, however, appear to cheer her up when it turns up suddenly at the Queen of Hearts’ croquet field, and when sentenced to death baffles everyone by making its body disappear like a 'Schrodinger's Cat', while its head still remains visible, sparking a massive argument between the executioner and the King let alone the Queen of Hearts about whether something, which does not have a body can indeed be beheaded.

At one point, the ‘Cheshire Cat’ disappears gradually until nothing is left but its grin, prompting Alice to remark that she has often seen a Cat without a grin but never a grin without a Cat. It is this unusual disappearing act for which most people remember the Cheshire Cat.

Cheshire is not an actual breed of Cat: but an English county which is not notable in the area of Cat breeding. However, Cheshire is right next door to Wales and at the time of Alice in Wonderland’s creation many of the old Pagan folk customs and faerie lore were still around as living memory, which associated the Feline with the feminine principle whereby one has many a Cat as a Witches Familiar.

Popular Superstitions – Witchcraft In Cheshire (Originally Published 1884) London, Aug. 30; the following paragraph appeared in the newspapers. Middlewich, Aug. 28: “There is risen up in this country a great doctress, an old woman, who is resorted to by people of all ranks and degrees, to be cured of all diseases; she lives four miles from hence, and has been in this great fame about 2 months; she has several hundreds of patients in a day out of all the country round for 30 miles. I went to see her yesterday out of curiosity, and believe near 600 people were with her. I believe all the country are gone stark mad. The chief thing she cures with is fasting spittle, and “God bless you with faith.”

There are reports that Carroll found inspiration for the ‘Cheshire Cat’ in a carving within a church in the village of Croft-on-Tees, in the North East of England, where his father had been Rector. Another view is that the Cat is based upon a Gargoyle found on a pillar within St Nicolas Church, Cranleigh, where Carroll used to travel frequently when he lived in Guildford. The Cat is named after Carroll’s home county, Cheshire. Others attribute the ‘Cheshire Cat’ to a carving upon the West face of the tower at St Wilfrid’s Church, Grappenhall, Warrington, in Cheshire; such possibilities for Carroll's inspiration could be true, however on has to keep in mind that there was a pre-Christian Pagan perception, which perceived a link between the Cat and the Feminine for one of the most popular Goddesses of pre-Christian Britain was known by the Saxon’s as Freo, otherwise called Freyja by the Norse, whom was the Mistress of Cats and Witchcraft whom is very Feline of Cheshire Cat.
